Wat kost een Shopify-webshop echt? What does a Shopify store really cost?
The build is only half the story. What you pay every month for the platform, apps and payments is almost always underestimated. Here is the whole sum, with the amounts I pay myself.
Bijna elk eerste gesprek gaat hierover.
| Post | Per maand | Toelichting |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Basic | € 27 | Bij jaarlijks betalen. Maandelijks is € 36. |
| Apps | € 0 – 60 | Zie hieronder. Dit is de post die stilletjes groeit. |
| Zakelijke mail | € 6 | Microsoft 365 of Google Workspace, per gebruiker. |
| Post | Eenmalig | Per jaar |
|---|---|---|
| Bouw van de winkel | € 1.450 | — |
| Platform en domein | — | € 342 |
| E-mail en apps | — | € 540 |
| Transactiekosten | — | € 1.140 |
| Totaal eerste jaar | ongeveer € 3.470 | |
Almost every first conversation is about this. Someone has read somewhere that Shopify costs twenty-nine euros a month, and expects the rest to be a matter of picking a theme. That holds right up until you actually want to sell something.
Below I lay it all out: what the build costs, what you pay every month, and which items people consistently forget.
What the build costs
For a store that is just starting, a realistic range is one to five thousand euros. That gap comes down to two things: how many products you have and whether they have variants.
I work with a fixed price of €1,450 for a complete store within two weeks. That covers setting up the theme, the product pages, the payment and shipping settings, the legal pages and the email integration. Anything outside that is listed as a separate module with a price next to it, so you can choose for yourself.
What pushes the price up:
- Lots of products. Entering up to twenty products is an afternoon. At a hundred it is a week, and at that point you want to do it through a file rather than by hand.
- Variants with their own photos. Five colours times three sizes is fifteen combinations, and if every colour needs its own photo that adds up.
- Multiple languages. A second language is not twice the work, but it is roughly half again.
- Migration. Moving orders and customers from another platform is almost always more work than expected, because the data never fits exactly.
Always ask whether moving over your product photos and copy is included. It is the dullest work and exactly the part that sometimes falls outside the quote.
What you pay every month
This is usually where the budget goes wrong. The platform is the cheapest part of it.
| Item | Per month | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Basic | € 27 | Paid annually. Monthly it is € 36. |
| Domain name | € 1.50 | Around € 18 a year at a European registrar. |
| Email marketing | € 0 – 45 | Klaviyo is free up to 250 contacts, then it climbs. |
| Apps | € 0 – 60 | See below. This is the item that quietly grows. |
| Business email | € 6 | Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, per user. |
Budget fifty to a hundred and forty euros a month for a store that is genuinely trading. That excludes what each sale costs you, which is the next item.
The cost per sale
This is the number people overlook most often, and as you grow it becomes the largest.
Use Shopify Payments and you pay a percentage plus a fixed amount per transaction. For European cards that sits around 1.4 percent plus €0.25. Use a different payment provider such as Mollie and Shopify adds another two percent in transaction fees on top, on the Basic plan.
At an average order of fifty euros and a hundred orders a month:
- With Shopify Payments: roughly €95 a month in transaction costs.
- With an external provider on Basic: roughly €195 a month, because of that extra two percent.
That hundred euro a month difference is why I nearly always start new stores on Shopify Payments. For the Dutch market it also means iDEAL is included by default.
Apps: the item that grows
Each app costs five to twenty-five euros a month, which makes it look negligible. Six apps later you are paying eighty euros a month for features you use three of.
My rule: install an app once you have the problem, not when you think you might get it. And if you have not opened it in three months, cancel it.
What most stores genuinely need:
- A reviews app, once you have enough customers to ask.
- Something for email, but that is Klaviyo and it starts free.
- A link to your accounting, if you do not want to keep it by hand.
The rest can nearly always wait. Filters, bundle discounts and loyalty programmes are nice, but not in month one.
The sum, all together
For a store doing a hundred orders a month at an average of fifty euros in its first year:
| Item | One-off | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| Building the store | € 1,450 | — |
| Platform and domain | — | € 342 |
| Email and apps | — | € 540 |
| Transaction costs | — | € 1,140 |
| First year total | around € 3,470 | |
On sixty thousand euros of revenue that is just under six percent. Less than most marketplaces charge, and you own your own customer list.
Where to save and where not to
Save on apps. Almost every feature can wait until you know you need it.
Save on the plan. Basic is enough until you are doing a few hundred orders a month. Shopify will push you to upgrade early; you do not have to.
Do not save on product photos. It is the only thing a visitor genuinely sees of your product. A good photographer for a day costs less than three months of apps.
Do not save on email. A properly built abandoned cart series pays for itself within a month. I wrote a separate piece about that.
